The various legislative acts by which the MEIBC is governed and which are presently applicable to the industry, are listed below.

Labour Relations Act (LRA) 66/1995
The LRA provides for the registration and regulation of bargaining councils, employer organisations and trade unions. In terms of disputes, it provides for dispute resolution procedures through the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the establishment of the Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court.
Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) 75/1997
The BCEA provides for the regulation and enforcement of basic conditions of employment for employees other than those covered by bargaining council agreements and other determinations.
Skills Development Act (SDA) 9/1999
The SDA provides for the training of workers and the improvement of skills. In terms of the SDA, Sector Training Authorities have been established to promote the development of workers.
Skills Development Levies Act
The SDA provides for the payment of skills development levies.
Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) 1993
The COIDA provides for compensation procedures for occupational (ie workplace) injuries and diseases.
Employment Equity Act (EEA) 55/1998.
The EEA provides for the promotion of equal opportunity and fair treatment in employment. Further it addresses the implementation of action measures to redress disadvantages in respect of designated groups.
Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA)
The UIA provides for unemployment payments for a limited period, maternity leave payments, death benefits and illness allowances.
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
The OHSA provides for measures relating to the occupational health and safety for workers
