The union, Solidarity, has recently approached the Court to place the MEIBC under business rescue. This is not much different from asking the Court to liquidate the Council. What makes this action to be unprecedented is that it is championed by a Trade union whose members would be at the receiving end if the Council was to close its doors due to this action.
The Special MANCO meeting of the 3 February 2015 resolved that the Office of MEIBC and the General Secretary must request the Minister of Labour to extend the period of operation of the following industry agreements for a further 5 year period:
NEASA had attempted to interdict the MEIBC from submitting its application for
extension of the Main Agreement 2014/17 to the Minister of Labour through a Labour
Court application instituted in September 2014.
We refer to NEASA Industry Alert circular dated the 24th February 2015 and titled “Metal
Industry Crunch Time”
The purpose of this circular is to respond to the industry circulars issued by National Employers Association of South Africa (NEASA) dated 19 January 2015 and 2 February 2015 respectively.
We wish to confirm that as the result of the Plastic negotiations between PCASA and some unions in our industry, the plastics sector remains covered by the Registered Scope of the MEIBC.
